"Historic and contemporary primitive art"Navajo weavings began in the early 1700's through the 1850's. The Navajo migrated to the southwest from Canada in the 15th century. Navajo women learned weaving in the 1600's from the Pueblo Indian neighbors who had been growing cotton since 800 AD. Spanish settlers brought their Churro sheep to the region in the early 1600's and introduced the Navajo to wool, this was known as the classic period. By the 1800s Navajo weavers used wool exclusively and became well known for their finely woven blankets that became trade items.
