Paige visited one of our favorite vendors, Tamarian, for a week long Community & Creatives event: Present Company. This brought together clients, friends, artists & designers for a discussion on what Tamarian is today, from grass roots to global ties.
Our good friend Michael Christie AKA The Ruggist spoke and presented his “The Nature of Weaving”. He began this project during COVID, exploring the perspective of a day in the life of a weaver.

Aside from shopping for rugs, seeing new designs & touring Tamarian’s HQ the focus for the week was on the topic of, “ as Slow Making.” Weaving is an ancient art found in nature (birds weaving their own nests etc). Modern weaving is inspired by nature following lineage and tradition and is ever evolving. The Sanskrit word Tantra means “loom.” Slow making is interactive between the weaver and the loom using wool and raw materials. There is a time commitment to carpet construction from raising the sheep, gathering the raw materials, dying the wool, spinning the wool, building the loom, hand-knotting the carpet & finally hand-finishing the rug. Tamarian’s rugs use heritage techniques adapted to modern sensabilities.

One of the many reasons we love Tamarian is their way of giving back to the local Nepali community. Not only are they a member of Label Step but they
provide education for the children of their weavers through grade 12. They also help fund the Nepal Cleft and Burn Center as well as the Himalayan Childrens’ Foundation.
